• Striders produce good performances at the Southern Veterans League

    Striders of Croydon produced some good performances in the second Southern Veterans League match of the season, at Sutton Arena on Monday. In wet conditions, Paul Cripps did well to win both the high jump, where he set a new club over-55 record of 1 metre 45, and the triple jump, where he set a new club over-55 record of 9 metres 61. Steve Corfield had an excellent run to place second in his heat of the 1500 metres, setting a new club over-55 record of 5 minutes 05.5 seconds. Peter Johnson was seventh in the same race in a personal best 5 minutes 18.5. Julian Spencer-Wood had another excellent run to win his heat of the 1500 metres in a club over-70 record of 5 minutes 53.2, making him the oldest Strider ever to run the distance in less than six minutes.

    Lorraine Hunte ran very well in the 200 metres to set a new club W65 record of 38.2 seconds, placing third in her heat. Striders had five other competitors in the 200 metres:  Paul Cripps ran 30.0, Steve Corfield 30.5, Steve Massey 31.8, Peter Johnson 33.4 and Sandra Francis 39.3. Joseph Ibe was seventh in his heat of the 5000 metres, recording 19 minutes 03.4, while Steve Massey ran 19:38.8 and Matthew Radford ran 23:12.7.

    At Walthamstow on Friday, James Rhodes finished 10th out of 17 runners in his heat of the 10000 metres, recording a personal best of 37 minutes 09.44 seconds. On Sunday, Louise Grech was the 43rd woman to finish the RunThrough Richmond Park Half-Marathon, recording 2 hours 00 minutes 23 seconds. Peter Johnson was 71st in the Dorking 10-mile road race (68:15), while Maria Gabriel was the 55th woman to finish (86:17).
