• Keith Simpson sets new over-70 club age-group record at the Kent Coastal Half-Marathon

    80-year-old Kevin Burnett, from Striders of Croydon, climbed to tenth place in this year’s British over-80 discus rankings when he threw a club age-group record of 17 metres 76 at the Herne Hill Open Meeting at Tooting Bec. He also set a new club age-group record of 4 metres 86 in the shot.

    In the Kent Coastal Half-Marathon at Margate, Keith Simpson ran very well to win the over-70 category in a new club age-group record of 2 hours 03 minutes 02 seconds.

    In the Benicassim 10K in Spain last week, Simone Luciani ran well to place eighth of 709 finishers in 35 minutes 46 seconds. In the Lloyd parkrun on Saturday, Simone placed second of 280 finishers in 17 minutes 39. Krzysztof Klidzia was first in the over-50 category, placing seventh overall (18:19), while Jon Dean was first in the over-60 category, placing 24th overall (20:43). For the second successive week, Andrea Jeffries was the second woman to finish the Treviso parkrun in Italy, placing eighth overall (25:38). Martin Filer was third in the Riddlesdown parkrun (18:59), while Steph Upton was the third woman to finish, placing 31st overall (21:59). Debra Bourne was the third woman to finish the Glasgow Springburn parkrun, placing 30th overall (23:15). Striders had a total of 78 finishers in the various weekly parkruns.

    In the Ladywell 10000 metres track races, organised by Kent Athletic Club, Striders were led by Graeme Drysdale, who was making his track debut and ran 38 minutes 40.20 seconds. Club colleague John O’Mahony ran 40 minutes 57.54. In the South London Harriers Open Meeting at Woodcote, Peter Johnson was eighth in his heat of the 5000 metres (20:45.55).

    This Saturday (14th), Striders will be competing in the Will Bolton Memorial Cross-Country Relays, organised by Blackheath & Bromley Harriers at Sparrows Den. (Will Bolton was a member of Blackheath & Bromley who died in a road accident in 2004.)
