Jemma Zakariyyau 13th at Women’s Surrey League XC race
Striders of Croydon produced a good team performance to place sixth out of 24 clubs in their first Surrey Womens Cross-Country League Division Two race of the season, at Wimbledon on Saturday. They were led by Jemma Zakariyyau, making her league debut, who had an excellent run to place 13th of the 240 finishers in 29 minutes 41 seconds. Niamh Vincent also ran well for 32nd (31:14) with Jenny Rowe 38th (31:42), Steph Upton 44th (32:07) and Laura Fell 72nd (33:57). Striders’ B team also did well to place third in their category. Amanda Hewett was 79th (34:36), Selena Wong 81st (34:46), Sophia Sachedina 88th (35:15), Susanna Lutman 100th (35:59) and Ally Whitlock 152nd (39:11). Striders also had seven non-scorers.
Striders’ men faced strong opposition in their Division One match at Richmond Park, and had to settle for ninth place in the team event. Alastair Falconer led them home in 77th position (29:59) with Phil Coales 97th (30:45), Andrew Aitken 103rd (31:11), Lee Flanagan 109th (31:33) and Iain Harrison 110th (31:38). Veteran Matthew Stone was 117th (31:53), Martin Filer 129th (32:20), Simon Ambrosi 130th (32:21), Tom Lawson 142nd (33:07) and Robert Lines completed the scoring team in 144th (33:10). Striders also had 13 non-scorers. In the under-13 race, Christopher Finch was 24th out of 60 finishers.
