Striders of Croydon did very well to finish fourth out of 51 teams in the annual Priory Cross-Country Relays, at Reigate on Saturday. They were led by Phil Coales who had an excellent run to place second on the first leg, recording 14 minutes 32 seconds. He was followed by Lee Flanagan (15:57), Krzysztof Klidzia (15:36) and Matthew Stone (16:39). Striders’ B team were 16th, while their C team were 19th. Both Coales and Flanagan ran a second leg to ensure that the club could complete three teams. They were supported by Luke Burden (16:25), Mick Turner (17:31), Andy Perks (17:33), Steve Massey (17:46), Simon Webster (17:56) and Chris Morton (18:06). Striders’ women were 22nd out of 42 teams. Team captain Nikki Javan ran their fastest leg of 19 minutes 27, and was supported by Amanda Hewett (20:52), Maria Gabriel (21:31) and Vanessa Wheeler (23:59).
In the Dublin Marathon, Tatsuya Okamoto had an excellent run to place 192nd in a large field, recording 2 hours 46 minutes 25 seconds. This places him equal tenth in Striders’ all-time club rankings. Club colleague Nicole Woods ran 4 hours 00 minutes 29. In the New York Marathon, Darren Jackson ran 3 hours 10 minutes 56, while in the Toronto Marathon, Ally Whitlock ran 4 hours 06 minutes 25.
